Guardian to Replace Standard Life Insurance
March 2, 2011
Retired Detroit Police and Fire Fighters Association

Beginning January 1, 2011 the Guardian Insurance Company will be providing the DPOA group life insurance, replacing Standard for those currently enrolled in the plan. The transition will be seamless as the Guardian policy currently mirrors the Standard policy.

Guardian Insurance Company is very active in providing life insurance needs to groups in the public sector, such as the DPOA.

The Standard policy was up for renewal on January 1, 2011, and had provided the new rates to the DPOA.
The new rates were much higher than the previous rates and came with only a 2-year rate guarantee. Other major life insurance companies were then contacted and were asked to submit bids for the same policy benefits in an effort to lower the costs to DPOA members.

The Guardian Insurance Company submitted the lowest rates for the same type policy with a 3-year rate guarantee and increased benefits.

Although the Guardian rates are slightly higher than what members are paying now, they are much lower than the rates submitted by Standard.

In addition to providing the lowest premium rates of all bids submitted, Guardian has agreed to conduct an open enrollment period for active members who are not currently enrolled in the Group Life Insurance plan.
The open enrollment is tentatively scheduled to take place in February or March 2011.

Guardian has also agreed to provide a $50,000 benefit level policy for those active members who want additional life insurance coverage. Officers will be able to obtain the additional coverage during the open enrollment period.

You may receive an accelerated benefit of up to 50 percent of your insurance, to be paid to you once in your lifetime.

Refer to the accompanying chart for the new rates.
